We're two weeks into the new year and work is already pushing forward on some projects. I never make new year resolutions, but each year I do tend to make a general wish list of work I want to complete or projects I want to kick off during the coming year. A number of goals for 2015 will be wrapping up projects I started last year while also kicking off a few more.
Hogtown Spirits: Barb and I self-published digitally the first issue of our noir comic in November and it got some pretty great reviews. I'm working right now on putting together a short print run of the issue, to be sold locally for the most part and maybe the occasional mail out. The script for issue 2 is already polished and waiting, and a first draft for issue 3 is complete. If I can work out the budget to pay Barb we'll jump on making these next issues this year. I'm also looking into seeing if there are any indie publishers that might be interested in this kind of noir anthology-style series.
Ark: Selena is working on wrapping up issue 1, aiming for end of January. She illustrates and colours every page so it's a bit of a slower process. Once the pages are done we'll get it lettered and sent out as pitch for the mini-series. We have a six issue story arc planned, with all six scripts complete. We'll self-publish if we can't find any interested publishers. Possibly as single issues online only and a printed book collection later, or just as a full length graphic novel. Not sure. Except to see me posting some peeks at the new artwork soon.
The Secret World of Glacier Thorne: David is aiming to wrap up the art for issue 1 by end of January and Paris will colour the final pages. Once it's lettered it'll be good to send out as a pitch and/or then self-publish. This series works more like an ongoing one but I've been tightening up my notes and outline to focus it into more of a maxi-series, 10-12 issues to pitch, or to consider self-publishing. I should have some more art to preview on here in February.
School Spirit: A new comic series I'm searching for an artist for, a fun teen supernatural mystery series. The first story arc is three issues, and the scripts are polished and ready. I'm also considering it as a series of graphic novels, rather than single issues. Hopefully I find the right artist in the next few months and we can get to work on it. Would love to have it complete by 2016.
Scouts of Zero: Another comic series, a teen sci-fi space action/adventure story. I have an artist interested but we haven't talked much about it yet. Need to wrap up a few other things first. The script for the first issue is complete for this though. I'd like to get this first issue complete this year and ready to pitch.
Kingdom Come: Another comic series, this one is more of a silly urban fantasy kind of story, probably a five issue mini series. The script for the first issue is done and there's an outline for the rest of the story. If I come across the right artist I might pursue this, but in the meantime I'll probably keep on the sideline.
Other comics: I have two or three other comic projects I'm toying with, playing around with drafts of the scripts, seeing what they become. I doubt they'll see the light this year but who knows.
Kayce Quantum & The Island of Enigma: This is my young adult fantasy adventure novel I've been working on for the past couple of years. I'd never written a novel before so I set out to do it and having never really written prose before there's been a lot of learning to do, it's a slow but fun process. I did five drafts of the book and then in October I started working with an editor on it. My editor has been amazing. His notes are incredible and really got me thinking even harder about the story and characters, and in generally making me a better writer, teaching me a lot about telling a story over 300 or so pages, rather than a 22 page script. I've started on the 6th draft of the novel these past two weeks and it's coming along nicely, though it'll be quite different from the previous version when it's done, and much better. I'd like to get this new draft done by the spring and then if it's ready start pitching it out to agents/publishers, see if there's any interest.
Other projects: Inevitably a new idea will pop up and I'll want to pursue it this year, so I'm sure I'll have a few other projects on the go by the end of 2015. Outside of writing there is talk and plans for some fun projects: another season of Open Roof Festival this summer, possibly a fun interactive theatre type of thing late in the year, some fun events and more escape rooms at my job with Real Escape, I've been thinking of collecting some old band photography of mine into a PDF and/or print-on-demand book, maybe dip back into making music?
I also try to make time on most days to write something, read something, watch something, and listen to something. There's just too much stuff to enjoy in life. We really need more hours. And all these projects above will very likely get sidetracked, delayed, changed, as my life in 2015 goes in some very new and awesome directions. So this is just a working wish list, but I'm pretty good at making my wishes come true.
