My self-published noir comic got its very first review today, from culture blog We The Nerdy. They cover comics, movies, games, tech stuff, and they gave Hogtown Spirits a 9/10! That's pretty awesome for our first review on our first comic. In the review the writer hits on some great aspects of the comic and really got what we were going for. Here are a few lines that really make me happy:
"The city feels like a character in and of itself and I left the book truly feeling like I’d travelled to a unique place..." "The story itself really got its claws in me and was actually quite a heartfelt and nostalgic tale. I was initially prepared for a very hard-boiled story but instead got something that actually had quite a few melancholic elements and focused greatly on character." "I could easily see this series being lengthened into a mini-series...I would gladly return to Hogtown for anything these two have up their sleeve." You can read the whole review here. Pick up the comic on Comixology or Gumroad. It's the only way to really enjoy Barb's gorgeous art!

Hogtown Spirits #1: Wyatt Blake is out tomorrow! Here's a look at the art for Page 3 featuring our main character Wyatt and the Night Howl's bartender Dash Hamilton. Take a look at that bottom left panel, with Wyatt appearing inside the shape of a bottle. There's a lot more like that in the pages after this, where Barb really went after the mood and the emotions of the characters and story, instead of whatever boring description I wrote in the script. That panel perfectly encapsulates Wyatt at that moment, and the pages Barb made after this she really pushed herself with the layouts. They were so great that when I got the final art back I scrapped a lot of dialogue and captions, keeping only the bare minimum needed, so that the art could tell the story. The whole book became a lot more moody and dreamlike than just noir, which is what I was going for, but Barb really brought it to life and solidified that, better than I was imagining. The script is below for this page if you're interested the dialogue that's happening here (I know the document below says Page 4 instead of 3 but that is the correct script page, in the actual book the page numbers fall a bit different due to a credits page). Pick it up tomorrow on Comixology or Gumroad and let us know what you think! Here's page 2 of Hogtown Spirits #1: Wyatt Blake. Once again Barb's artwork is too good. Love the shading on the crowd in the club, kinda want to listen in on whatever conversation those guys are having. And our bartender, Dash Hamilton, chipping away at the ice block is just perfect. The jazz club in Hogtown is called the Night Howl. Like many things in Hogtown it was inspired by something in the real city of Toronto, in this case, a mix of The Rex hotel and jazz bar and the historical Colonial Tavern. The chipping away at the spherical ice block was inspired by the incredible bartenders at BarChef on Queen St. W.. Grab a drink there and sit at the bar to watch them work, it's fantastic. For those interested in the writing side of comics below is the script for this page of the book. The comic is out digitally this Wednesday through Comixology and Gumroad. Just look at Barb Felix's gorgeous art. This is the first page of our upcoming comic Hogtown Spirits #1: Wyatt Blake. Getting this page in my inbox waybackwhen was such a treat. So much mood in these panels. That's our main character in the bottom one. More page peeks in the next few days. The comic is out digitally Nov. 26th! I didn't include the lettering in the panels above because the art is too nice not to feature on its own, but if you're interested in how this page came about, below is the script for the page. |
