Picked up five comics this week at The Beguiling, a mix of books I read regularly and some new stuff.
Tooth & Claw is a new wild and original series, kind of epic fantasy with animal characters instead of human. The art has such great detail it'll take a few reads to really appreciate it. Fun set up of an epic story. Velvet continues to be an amazing spy drama/thriller series from one of my fav comic writers Ed Brubaker. Steve Epting's art is cinematic and stunning every issue. Great mix of Bond-like action and more cerebral spying like in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Gotham Academy is only on its second issue but it's already one of best books on the shelf. Gorgeous art and colour, great development of both main and side characters, fun story hooks, a nice youthful energy to it all. Superman is not a character I'm usually interested in but Scott Snyder is one of my fav current comic writers so I read this Superman mini-series. I still prefer Snyder's original creator-owned work and his Batman series but this was a good take on Superman with really dynamic artwork. Penny Dora & The Wishing Box is a new kid-friendly series I picked up. Kid-friendly comics seem in short supply so it's nice to see another one on the shelf, one that has a fun, mysterious story and good art. |
